A convenient delayed harvest stream perfect for a morning of trout fishing before exploring downtown Sylva.
Scott Creek is one of my favorite places to fish when I’m spending the day in Sylva. This delayed harvest stream offers excellent trout fishing throughout much of the year and is especially productive shortly after stocking. Whether you prefer dry flies or nymphs, Scott Creek consistently provides plenty of opportunities within minutes of downtown.
It’s an easy outing that combines great fishing with one of my favorite mountain towns.

Scott Creek is managed as a delayed harvest stream, making it fishable most of the year outside of the annual harvest period in March. Fishing can be exceptional after the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission completes a stocking, so be sure to check the daily stocking report before planning your trip.
I’ve had success here with both dry flies and nymphs, and one of my better brown trout came from a deep pool that I still stop and fish every visit.
Convenient to Sylva
I usually begin near Speedy’s Pizza, but there is plenty of public water to explore throughout the delayed harvest section. Scott Creek is ideal if you’re looking for a relaxed morning of fishing without committing to a full-day backcountry adventure.
After a few hours on the water, spend the rest of the day exploring downtown Sylva. Grab a coffee, browse the local shops, and finish with lunch at Meatballs—one of my favorite restaurants in town. Don’t forget to stop at the Tuckasegee Fly Shop on W.Main for your gear while you are in town.

My Take
Scott Creek isn’t about wilderness or hiking miles into the backcountry. It’s about convenience and consistently good fishing. When I want a few hours on the water followed by coffee, shopping, and lunch in Sylva, this is one of my first choices. It’s an easy recommendation for guests staying at Purple Top who want a fun, productive day without venturing deep into the national park.
