Big Snowbird Creek is one of my favorite trout streams in North Carolina. It’s a commitment from Purple Top Retreat, but if you’re willing to make the drive, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most complete fly fishing experiences in the mountains. From productive delayed harvest water to remote native brook trout headwaters, Snowbird offers something for every angler.
The creek has a classic Smokies feel, with crystal-clear water, mountain campsites, rhododendron-lined banks, and miles of fishable water waiting to be explored.

The delayed harvest section fishes exceptionally well throughout the delayed harvest season and is one of the least crowded DH fisheries I’ve found in Western North Carolina. You’ll find brook, brown, and rainbow trout, with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the river.
To reach the delayed harvest section, drive Big Snowbird Road until you reach the concrete bridge on Forest Service Road 2579. From there, walk downstream toward the old railroad footbridge to fish the delayed harvest water. The road provides easy access while still feeling surprisingly remote.
Fishing + Camping
Once you’ve enjoyed the delayed harvest section, continue hiking upstream into the wild trout water. As the creek narrows and climbs into the mountains, you’ll begin finding beautiful wild Southern Appalachian brook trout in the headwaters.
One of my favorite parts of Snowbird is its atmosphere. First-come, first-served campsites line portions of the creek, giving the entire valley an old-school mountain camping feel that’s becoming harder to find. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an entire weekend fishing, camping, and never feel rushed.
My Take
Big Snowbird Creek isn’t a quick morning trip—it’s a destination. I consider it one of the best day trips you can make from Purple Top Retreat. The drive is longer than many of the other rivers on this site, but the combination of lightly pressured delayed harvest fishing, wild brook trout in the headwaters, and the classic mountain atmosphere makes every mile worthwhile. If you only fish one stream outside the immediate Cashiers area during your stay, Big Snowbird deserves serious consideration, but you need to give. yourself the entire day.
